My sister Alli has been working as an intern at the Minnesota Zoo since September. A dream come true for her, and to top it off, she has been working with the dolphins! One of the female dolphins, Ali, has been expecting a baby, and my sister Alli had a big part in it. She worked the over night shift watching, monitoring, playing with the dolphins waiting for the baby to arrive. Once the baby was born, her job would be to "dolphin sit" on the overnight shift until it was old enough to be left alone.
We have all been waiting anxiously for Alli's text to let us know that the baby has arrived. I woke up this morning to a text that the baby dolphin was stillborn. Shock and sadness is all the words that I can muster. My sister has poured her heart and soul into her work up there and it breaks my heart to know that she is suffering. I know it might be hard to relate, but an easy way to look at it is that Alli treats her animals as if they were her own kids. And that is why my heart is broken. I know that she is going to be a better Vet because of this. I know she is going to take what she learned today and do something spectacular. But for now, send her and her Zoo friends some hugs, as they are all feeling a great loss.
I am so sorry, Alli. I love you.
